In the fiercely competitive job market of today, the pursuit of that dream job often leads individuals to seek every advantage they can gather. It’s not uncommon for job seekers to look to their friends, family members, peers or even professionally crafted samples for inspiration and guidance.

However, a fine line exists between seeking inspiration and resorting to resume and LinkedIn profile plagiarism—a practice that, far from being a form of flattery, comes with a set of significant dangers.

Having spent more than two decades in the resume writing industry, I’ve witnessed countless instances of people copying resumes word-for-word, replicating designs, mimicking LinkedIn profiles, and even emulating colleague’s posts and web content.

While there are times we lean on one another for inspiration in terms of wording, design concepts, and more, pure imitation rarely serves as a catalyst for success. Standing in the shadow of imitation obscures your individuality and leads you away from the journey of uncovering and conveying your own distinct value, talents, and strengths.

What does it take to stand out in today’s professional job market?

Be Authentic

It is only through authenticity that you can add value and truly make a difference in your field of expertise. When you copy and paste content from someone else’s resume or LinkedIn profile, you sacrifice the opportunity to showcase what makes YOU unique —how your skills, experiences, and achievements align with an employer’s needs.

A resume is a personal marketing tool meant to reflect the individuals’ professional journey, not a borrowed script. Copying dilutes the power of your narrative, turning a potentially engaging career story into a dull echo of someone else’s experiences.

Uphold Your Integrity

Using a plagiarized resume or LinkedIn profile can severely undermine your credibility. Employers and hiring managers utilize both resumes and LinkedIn profiles to evaluate a candidate’s qualifications before considering them.

Employers use software and other tools to find specific phrases / keywords. If they find identical or nearly identical content on other profiles, it suggests plagiarism.

Discovering copied or falsified content can lead to an immediate dismissal of the applicant, as it raises questions about the candidate’s honesty and suitability for the role.

It’s crucial you maintain honesty and integrity in all professional documents.

Avoid Being Trapped in a Legal Maze

Keep in mind plagiarism in a job search can have legal and ethical consequences. Resumes are considered intellectual property and copying someone else’s resume (without permission from the original author) is a breach of copyright, and it can result in legal action.

If a copied resume includes false or misleading information about qualifications, achievements, or experiences, it may lead to accusations of fraud and misrepresentation. This too can have legal consequences, especially if it results in securing a job under false pretenses.

Furthermore, swiping someone else’s resume contradicts ethical principles such as honesty, trustworthiness, and fairness, which are highly valued in the professional world.

Keep in mind ‘borrowing’ a LinkedIn profile is considered a breach of LinkedIn’s User Agreement which includes terms and conditions related to truthful and accurate profile information. Violating these terms can result in account suspension or other actions.

“You promise to only provide information and content that you have the right to share, and that your LinkedIn profile will be truthful. You agree to only provide content or information that does not violate the law nor anyone’s rights (including intellectual property rights)” February 2022

The severity of legal consequences can vary based on factors such as the extent of the copying, the impact of the deception, and applicable laws in a specific jurisdiction.

To avoid legal issues, it’s always best to create an authentic and original resume that accurately reflects your qualifications and experiences.

The Deception Dilemma

While copying a resume might seem like a shortcut to securing a job, the consequences of deception can eventually emerge.

Employers quickly discern when a candidate lacks the essential qualifications for the role they’ve been hired for. The stark misalignment between their skills and the job’s demands becomes apparent, leading to dissatisfaction, and potentially negative impact on the candidate’s career trajectory.

If the employer doesn’t catch the deception, colleagues often do as they interact with the new hire it may become apparent the individual lacks the experience they initially portrayed on their resume. This can lead to doubts about their credibility and ability to lead or contribute to the team.

This underscores the importance of authentic representation of a candidate’s career story.

Drawing inspiration from others when crafting your resume and LinkedIn profile is acceptable but directly copying their documents is not. Your resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, and professional biography should authentically reflect your identity and the distinct value you bring to potential employers. Each component of your career marketing portfolio should complement one another and showcase your unique journey and expertise, not mirror someone else’s path and accomplishment.

To stand out and succeed in the competitive job market, job seekers are better off investing time and effort into crafting a unique and authentic resume that truly reflects their qualifications and aspirations.

Imitation may be flattering, but in the world of resumes, it’s authenticity that truly shines.
